The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) said it was against BTS exemption from military service.

Regarding the ruling party's claim that military service benefits for world star BTS (BTS) are needed, the Military Manpower Administration, the ministry in charge, said it is "not fair and fair."

Yoon Joo-kyung, a member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee, received data from the Military Manpower Administration on Tuesday on "improving the alternative military service system in the field of popular culture and arts."

Yoon sent a questionnaire, saying, "What is your position on Democratic Party lawmaker Noh Woong-rae's claim to give military service benefits to BTS?" Referring to the contents of the November 21, 2019 State Affairs Inspection Coordination Meeting, the Military Manpower Administration said, "We decided to exclude the inclusion of art personnel in the field of popular culture and arts from the review because it does not fit the overall alternative service reduction stance and the government's basic position to enhance fairness and equity in the execution of military service. The decision remains unchanged even now," he said. This is the first time that the Military Manpower Administration has made clear its opposition to the issue of "BTS military service benefits."

Some members of the Democratic Party of Korea have argued that it is unreasonable to exclude only popular artists such as BTS from the military service exemption and that it is not suitable for the recent trend (such as Rep. Noh Woong-rae). In response, the Military Manpower Administration said, "We are not currently working on granting special treatment to popular cultural artists to serve like art and sports agents."

Earlier, Park Yang-woo, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said in a parliamentary audit of the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee on the 7th, "There is a need for a forward review" when asked about the BTS' exemption from military service. In the wake of this, Yoon asked, "What related discussions are you having with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism?" and the Military Manpower Administration replied, "No."

Rep. Jeon Yong-ki of the Democratic Party of Korea proposed a revision to the Military Service Act last month to allow outstanding people in the field of pop culture and arts to be conscripted and called up, which the Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister recommended by acknowledging that he has enhanced the status and dignity of the nation. Regarding the revision, the Military Manpower Administration said it will review the issue with related ministries based on public consensus. Although it is not an exemption from military service or a special exemption, it seems to have left open the possibility of discussing the postponement of the enlistment.

Recently, as BTS became the first Korean singer to top the Billboard main singles chart, calls for military service benefits have grown. Among BTS members, Jin, the oldest, was born in 1992, and is the closest to enlistment period.

Under the current military service law, those who win the third or higher place in the Olympics, those who win the first place in the Asian Games, those who win the second or higher prize in the international art competition, and those who win the first place in the domestic art competition will be included as art and sports agents. If they complete four weeks of basic military training, they can continue to work in their specialties during their service period, and they can do 544 hours of volunteer work using their special skills.
